According to the Government of Alberta, 446 people have been successfully evacuated from flooded areas in Mackenzie County.

An evacuation order was issued on Sunday night for Fort Vermilion residents living east of 50th Street, north of the golf course, River Road, and Boreal Housing and all of North Vermilion.

Reeve, Josh Knelsen says most affected residents have found a place to stay until they can return home.

“45 percent of residents are staying with friends and family, either in holiday trailers or basements,” says Knelsen.

“The other 55 percent are staying in hotels or motels.”

Knelsen and Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor, Don Scott, joined Environment and Parks Minister, Jason Nixon in a press conference to update the province on the situation in their respective communities.

Nixon explains that it is difficult to predict when an ice jam will clear up.

“Ice jam floods are very unpredictable and conditions can change with quickly with little warning,” states Nixon.

Between Fort McMurray and Mackenzie County, Nixon says approximately 13,000 Albertans have been forced from their homes.

Nixon also points out the government is taking every precaution to protect evacuees from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Hotels and work camps are being used where possible so you and your family can be in safe, and contained, quarters.”

Knelsen spoke about the situation in the county and his remarks are below.
