The province is continuing to invest millions of dollars into venture capital funds to help grow the tech sector.

Doug Schweitzer, the Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation, says this will lead to thousands of jobs getting created in new industries.

“Everything from financial services to energy transition technology in the clean tech space to areas in the agricultural technology like drones and all this R&D happening in farms. It’s really technology that has applications across all of Alberta’s economy. We’re seeing this growth happen outside of our conventional economic drivers.”

Schweitzer was on the Trending 55 Hot Seat and says that this will help the traditional economic drivers of the province meet the demands of the global marketplace.

“This is encouraging and it’s going to help every single community grow and be viable long term. On top of that, we’re making a big investment into rural broadband which is going to help people access educational services, health care, everything else that goes along with the different disruptive technologies that have been really accelerated due to the pandemic.”

Last week, the province announced an investment of over $30 million into several venture capital funds.
