Protect yourself and others from the heat

July 8, 2021 – The heat has returned to the Peace Country. It may not as hot as the last heatwave, but there is still a heat warning in effect. Alberta Health Services has some tips for people still wanting to enjoy the outdoors, but to stay safe while doing so.

If you plan on being outdoors for an extended period of time:

  • Apply a sunscreen of at least sun protection factor (SPF) 30, at least 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Be sure the SPF 30 screens out both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply frequently (as directed on product label).
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/UVB CSA certified seal).
  • Wear light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover skin.
  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

AHS recommends taking frequent breaks from the heat to go indoors and cool off and to never leave a person or pet inside a closed vehicle, ever.

People getting too much sun or warmth could get heat stroke, and the signs to monitor for are:

  • high body temperature
  • lack of sweat
  • disorientation
  • fainting
  • unconsciousness

If someone is showing signs of heat stroke, they should get medical attention as soon as possible. While waiting for medical attention: move the person to a shaded area, remove outer layers of clothing and shoes and wrap the person in a wet towel until medical care is provided.
