Alberta Premier Danielle Smith was in the region this week, talking about several different topics at a town hall event in Peace River.

One topic was on the restructuring of the health care systems, with the Premier saying that they’re “working through” all of the problems identified.

“One of the things that we want Alberta Health Services to focus on is delivering hospital services. We’ve got to make that our emergency rooms are open and delivering care, that people are able to get surgeries and diagnostic procedures close to home which is really important in rural and remote communities. The second part is getting everyone connected to a family practitioner.”

The province also has their new payment model for nurse practitioners with Smith saying they encouraging them to be located in rural Alberta.

Nuclear energy in the Peace region was also discussed with Smith saying that there’s good potential for having a nuclear power plant here.

“The thing about this region is that especially if you couple it with the conversation about data centres and A.I., you need to have a cheap supply of electricity that is reliable, you need to also have a colder climate because it helps on the cooling and you need to have a reliable supply of water and there’s a lot of abundant water in the region.”

Smith says the region is “perfectly situated” for nuclear energy provided that both local residents and first nations want it to happen.
