With the major universities in the province announcing that they’re extending online learning, the NDP thinks there’s more the province can do to make campuses safer.

Advanced Education Critic David Eggen was on the Trending 55 Hot Seat and says the UCP government can ensure that all students and staff have access to N95 masks.

“We know that N95 masks are demonstrably better at dealing with an airborne disease like COVID and we know that if the UCP would choose to purchase N95 masks, they can get them at a very affordable rate. This would be an excellent investment to making sure that we have in person learning in our schools.”

Eggen also says the constant back-and-forth between online and in-person has impacted the mental health and learning of students.

“We know that going to college is all about learning your subject area, but it’s also being in that environment and interacting with colleagues and staff. This whole idea of not investing in the safety of our colleges and universities, it’s really frustrating quite frankly. The UCP government needs to make an investment to make sure that our colleges and universities are safe.”
