Police Continue Investigating Fatal Collision in Steen River Area

RCMP up in the High Level area continues to look into a fatal motor vehicle collision on Friday, October 20, 2017.

The incident happened at 7:45 AM in the Steen River area on Highway 35.

Police say their preliminary investigation revealed that a southbound car and an over-sized load heading northbound collided, resulting in a 10-hour traffic delay. It was down to just one-lane traffic until 5:45 PM, when it was re-opened to two lanes.

An 85-year-old Northwest Territories woman driving the southbound car died at the scene, while a 30-year-old woman travelling in the same car sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Northwest Health Centre in High Level.

Mounties say that while the cause of the crash is still to be determined, they say that it’s unlikely weather played a factor.

The driver of the northbound tractor trailer, as well as the drivers of the accompanying pilot vehicles, was not harmed in the crash.

The names of the deceased and injured occupants aren’t being released at this time. The family wants to continue notifying their next of kin first.
