The Town of Peace River is ready to have a discussion about making face masks mandatory.

While a bylaw in included in the council package, a town official told the Trending 55 Newsroom that it is a briefing note and not a debate on a bylaw,.

According to a document on council’s agenda, the town is considering a $100 fine for anyone not wearing a mask, and a $200 penalty for businesses that fail to post signage about the requirements.

The document says the proposed bylaw is similar to what was adopted by the City of Calgary on July 23.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Deena Hinshaw has said that face coverings reduce the spread of respiratory droplets, which can aid in the spread of COVID-19.

Part of the process includes getting feedback from residents and business owners.

Tonight’s meeting starts at 5:00 and the link to the meeting is here.
