Alberta Parks and Environment has issued a River Ice Advisory for the breakup of the Peace River at the Town of Peace River. It is expected for the Peace River ice cover to break up through the town between Friday April 2, and Sunday April 4.

The water levels are estimated to drop by 1.5 to 2.5 meters as the ice cover melts and no ice-related issues are predicted for the town during the ice cover breakup.

Communications Coordinator for the Town of Peace River, Autumn Hulme says based on the forecasting, there’s no risk for flooding right now. “Our biggest risk factor right now is the ice itself. This time of year the ice cover has badly degraded with warming temperatures, so we don’t want people out on the ice.” Hulme says the town has already notified residents of the annual ice breakup through their new Voyent Alert system.

Hulme says if people are looking for the simplest way to be informed on any issues regarding the Peace River or town, to sign up for Voyent Alert.
