The work on the Peace River bridge project is one of some big transportation ahead in the Peace Region.
According to a statement from Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen, the rehabilitation work will resume this spring with a new contract being awarded.
The work happening will include replacing the bridge hangers and repairing cracks in the original floor beams, the completion of which won’t be until the fall of 2026.
Also on the province’s rader is the replacing of the Tompkins Landing ferry near La Crete with a new bridge.
Geotechnical investigations are expected to be complete this winter with a report on bridge structure options expected this summer.
Another much discussed project is the extension of Highway 686 to provide a more direct link between the Peace region and Fort McMurray.
Dreeshen says in his statement that they’re in the “early stages of planning, focusing on preliminary engineering and geotechnical work over the next year.”
Below is the full statement from the Minister provided to the Trending 55 Newsroom
“Work on the Peace River Bridge rehabilitation will resume this spring, with a new contract being awarded. Safety remains a top priority as we address structural concerns identified during initial construction, including replacing the bridge hangers and repairing cracks in the original floor beams. We appreciate the community’s patience as we work toward project completion in fall 2026. For the Tompkins Landing ferry replacement near La Crete, geotechnical investigations are progressing well and are expected to wrap up this winter. Once completed, updated project estimates for bridge structure options will be prepared, with a report anticipated this summer. As for the Highway 686 expansion, we’re in the early stages of planning, focusing on preliminary engineering and geotechnical work over the next year. These projects are vital for improving transportation infrastructure in the region, allowing local products to reach markets more efficiently and supporting the long-term prosperity of Albertans.”
