There is new leadership now in place for the North Peace Hockey League.

Michael Mercredi has been appointed as the league’s new commissioner, he says he’s always had an interest in senior hockey.

“I was approached by a few people, to see if I could help out. I know those are big shoes to fill with Jack there and I’m going to give it a 100% shot to help this year and see what we can do and bring back senior hockey to our communities.”

He says he’s going to continue on from what former league president Jack McAvoy was doing.

“Making sure we can sustain the eight teams and see how it goes with other applications. The big goal I think for everyone is to make sure it starts off right and have the right schedule and making sure the teams can survive. We’ve got to get out more in the community and on social media and continue that and keep moving forward.”

Mercredi joins the league after having previously served as the president of the NWJHL.

The NPHL has also named Treena Pasichnuk as its Vice Commissioner.

The league will have eight teams this season, with the returns of the Spirit River Rangers, Valleyview Jets and Fort St. John Flyers.
