Premier Jason Kenney reiterated a point he made last week as he had a press conference on Monday to discuss the vaccination efforts of the province.

“We are in a race between the vaccine and the variants,” says Kenney.

“Right now, the variants are winning.”

Last week, the province announced a return to step one of its COVID-19 relaunch plan after cases started to soar, and hospitalizations slowly tick upwards.

Kenney says with more people getting inoculated against the novel coronavirus, that will be the key for a return to normal life.

“These measures are designed to buy us time to get enough Albertans vaccinated so we can finally get through this thing and get back to normal this summer,” states Kenney.

The Premier was asked when Albertans can expect the current restrictions to be relaxed and Kenney says the data will drive cabinet’s decisions.

“Right now, they (the COVID-19 numbers) are going up, at a pretty alarming pace,” explains Kenney.

He also explains that hospitalizations could reach as high as 600.

He also doubled down on his commitment that anyone who wants a dose of the vaccine will have received one by the end of June, but also stressed that the supply available to provinces in is the hands of the federal government.
