High Prairie RCMP weekend impaired driving operations

High Prairie, Alta.—On Saturday, June 5, 2021, High Prairie RCMP conducted a check-stop on Highway 750 near Grouard, Alta. During this time, over 80 vehicles were checked for open liquor, drugs and Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS).

MAS, is the process by which a roadside breath screening test is used to detect alcohol-impaired drivers. MAS will be used during traffic stops and at stationary check-stops. Drivers remain in their cars and the process is routine, quick and causes minimal delays for sober drivers. Mandatory alcohol screening is a proven traffic safety measure that will deter and better detect alcohol-impaired drivers.

Since Dec. 18, 2018, legislation has provided that the driving public may be required to provide a breath sample upon being lawfully stopped, under common or provincial law. With the over 80 vehicles checked during this initiative, there were zero impaired drivers identified and one provincial violation notice issued.

High Prairie RCMP would like to thank those drivers that were checked for their cooperation and driving sober, as well as those occupants who were responsible in getting a designated driver.
