The NDP Opposition wants members of the UCP caucus to follow through on their opposition to the Sovereignty Act in the legislature.

Energy Critic Kathleen Ganley says the proposed act from Premier Danielle Smith could brings lots of “uncertainty” to the business market.

“We’ve kinda seen a province go through this before and it created uncertainty in terms of what the laws were going to be going forward. Investors don’t like risk, that creates a lot of concern because certainly what we’re hearing from folks is that there was damage to Quebec’s economy and it’s taken very long to recover.”

The Act was criticized by some of Smith’s opponents in the UCP leadership race and by some cabinet ministers as well.

Ganley says their caucus has sent a letter to members of the UCP asking them to vote against it in the legislature.

“We sent the letter to them asking them to essentially talk to the business community, talk to their constituents, and to stand up for their principles. A lot of them have already come out against the Sovereignty Act. It’s my view that no fiscal conservative, which many of them claim to be, would vote in favour of this Sovereignty Act because of the detrimental impacts on the economy.”
