The NDP is pledging to put a halt on the piloting of the new math curriculum should they form the next provincial government.

Education Critic Sarah Hoffman says the new school curriculum has been “a failure in terms of setting kids up for success.”

“We’re continuing to see more evidence of that and it doesn’t take much for kids to believe that they’re not good at something. When you give them a curriculum that sets them up for failure and doesn’t give them the proper tools in a developmentally appropriate way to be successful, you really do them a significant disservice not just at that point in their life, but moving forward.”

She says Alberta kids were “hurt the most” when the curriculum was put together.

“He (Jason Kenney) brought in extreme opinions and disproven theories. He tried to lift pieces from American curriculums and we don’t need to americanize our schools. We have among the best scores when it comes to international rankings, instead Jason Kenney tried to politicize the curriculum. We really need to take that down a notch and put kids back at the centre of all this.”

Hoffman says their platform will also include more funding for K-12 schools and hiring more teachers.
