The UCP is expected to introduce their controversial gender policies in the legislature this fall and the NDP opposition is preparing to fight back on them.
Lizette Tejada is the NDP Critic for LGBT Issues, she says they will be consulting with pride and LGBT groups to discuss “the state of gender diversity politics in Alberta.”
“Through what the announcements have already been, we’re looking at some of the most regressive sets of policies in the country. (We’ll be) talking about some of those policies, talking about the role of parents in gender affirming healthcare, there’s a lot of misinformation being spread around, there’s misinformation around what kind of surgeries are being done at what ages.”
Tejada says they want to get a sense of where the LGBT community stands on the proposed policies.
“We’ll be talking to a lot of different groups about how we can combat this. I that public outcry is going to be a part of that and then of course legislatively we’re ready to face whatever is coming in the house to debate it and to combat it on the legislative level which could involve many things.”
Tejda adds quote “there is really no place for targeting the 2SLGBTQA community and especially not youth.”
Last month, several pride groups in the province announced that members of the UCP caucus would be banned from attending pride events.
