The MP for Peace River-Westlock is wondering what the New Democratic Party received in exchange for suspending Parliament until September.

“If you are going to ask Justin Trudeau for money, I think you are likely to get it,” says Arnold Viersen. “It’s just weird negotiations.”

With the governing liberals holding a minority, the party would need support from at least one opposition party.

In return for the NDP’s support, Prime Minister Trudeau said he would ask the provinces to provide 10 days of paid sick leave.

However, the federal government will need the blessings of individual provinces to make it happen.

“We are very frustrated that the NDP selling out democracy in Canada,” states Viersen. “We were very much looking forward to Parliament coming back, in reduced numbers.”

He also points out that since the final call on paid sick leave is ultimately in the hands of the premiers, the new democrats.

“What did the NDP get for this? I’m not sure,” questions Viersen.

MPs are now currently meeting once a week at the House of Commons, in limited numbers, along with two virtual sessions as part of a COVID-19 committee.

The liberal plan would increase the number of weekly meetings to four, which some members at The House, while others can participate virtually with large screens by the speaker’s chair.
