The provincial government is continuing to put more money into affordable housing.

Jason Nixon, the Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, says they’ve invested $16 million towards renovating and repairing affordable housing units.

“I challenged housing providers across the province to focus that $16 million on units that were offline and consequently were not providing a home for somebody or units that were about to come offline if we did not get them repaired immediately. 30 housing providers, including some up in Peace River responded and we’re able now to roll that money out to create 400 newly renovated units across the province.”

Of that $16 million, $400,000 is going to Heart River Housing in High Prairie, $250,000 to the North Peace Housing Foundation in Peace River and $150,000 to the Boreal Housing Foundation in High Level.

“We also in rural Alberta have some of the oldest units in the province. Anybody who knows some of the local lodges in their communities across Alberta know they’re aging and they certainly have not received the maintenance that they deserve over the last several decades. I’m excited to see this money flowing all across the province, but particularly the fact that there’s so many rural projects taking place.”

Nixon says the funding is available for units in need of repair and maintenance projects to help bring units up to date.
