The MLA for Central Peace-Notley says residents in the riding are looking forward to getting out more.

Todd Loewen says it’s nice to see places like parks and golf courses opening up but adds that is it important to give businesses the opportunity to open their doors.

“It was nice that we announced the parks opening, golf courses and things like that so people can enjoy the outdoors,” says Loewen.

“But now it is important to give businesses the opportunity to open and some are taking advantage of it, and some are not, but that is entirely up to them but at least they have that opportunity if they want to take it.”

Loewen did acknowledge that there could be an upswing in new COVID-19 cases but says he has full confidence in the guidelines established by Chief Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Deena Hinshaw.

“We know there could be an uptick because of the opening but Doctor Hinshaw feels it is safe to go, so it is good that things are starting to get going now,” mentions Loewen.

He adds that he has heard from a lot of constituents who are excited that rules are being relaxed, but also suggests that if you do not feel comfortable being out and about, it’s okay to stay home.

“If you don’t feel comfortable going to parks, or helping any of these businesses then they have every right to stay home.”

Loewen encourages anyone who is thinking of shopping this weekend to keep it local if possible.

“Some of the big-box stores in the cities were able to keep their doors open and carry on but some of our local businesses have really suffered through this,” explains Loewen.

“These (business owners) are people in our community and we have to do our best to support them and keep them going.”

In closing, Loewen reminds all residents to be cautious, especially around seniors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the coronavirus.

“We know that this disease is harder on them than others so we need to be careful as we visit seniors, and anyone else who could be vulnerable with a weaker immune system,” concludes Loewen.
