Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd has been fined $1 million after pleading guilty to violating the Fisheries Act.
The company was found to have discharged over 30 million liters of toxic effluent into the Peace River on April 14, 2021.
This discharge was deemed potentially harmful to fish populations downstream.
The incident occurred due to insufficient capacity in the mill’s spill pond, which was meant to handle excess wastewater during maintenance shutdowns.
Since the violation, Mercer Peace River has increased the spill pond’s capacity and upgraded its pumping system.
The fine will contribute to the federal government’s environmental damages fund.
