The CN Rail crossing on Highway 2A (Roma Drive), has the MD of Peace council concerned for the safety of highway users. At the council meeting on March 23, 2021, council decided to continue discussions on troubleshooting the issue with the rail crossing.

Bob Willing, the Reeve for the MD of Peace says council has been in contact with our regional manager for Alberta Transportation, but the feedback they have received hass not been in their favour. “It’s not the highways that’s responsible for the actual crossings, it’s CN.” Willing says council has sent a letter to CN regarding the dangerous crossing on Roma Drive.

Willing says the situation is frustrating, as the issue is under federal jurisdiction and on private land. “There’s not much we can do other than remind them (CN) it needs to be addressed.” Willing reiterated council has also sent letters out to Alberta Transportation and Peace River-Westlock MP Arnold Viersen about the rough railway crossing that’s out of their control for fixing.

While the issue is in the works of being resolved, Willing says it could take a while for anything to happen. In the meantime, Willing says “I think people need to be aware, railway crossings at the best of times can be quite rough. There not always rated for the same speed that the highway is, just slow down.” Willing wants to remind residents, its not the MD’s responsibility to fix it, but they will continue to advocate for the best possible outcome.
