A massive recall has been issued by Health Canada for Kidde and Garrison fire extinguishers.
It specifically includes 134 models which have a plastic handle. Each was sold between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017.
About 2.7 million of the units that were sold in Canada need replacements, as they can become clogged and fail during an emergency.
Health Canada says that consumers should immediately contact Kidde to request a free replacement. The company will also provide instructions on returning the recalled unit, as it may not work properly in a fire emergency. Two such incidents of limited or failed activation in Canada have been reported, one of which included some property damage.
Each of the units was manufactured in the United States and Mexico.
Consumers may contact Kidde toll-free at 855-233-2882 from 6:30 AM to 3 PM Alberta Time Monday through Friday, except on holidays, or between 7 AM and 1 PM on Weekends.
