Justice Minister and Solicitor General, Kaycee Madu is back on the Trending 55 Hot Seat. We covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • The government’s desire to pursue a provincial police force as recommended in the Fair Deal Panel. “The blunt truth is that the Fair Deal Panel report told us that the people of our province are dissatisfied with the state of our law enforcement, and especially with the state of our relationship with Ottawa.”
  • On Alberta’s constitutional challenge of Bill C-69, which the provincial government calls the “no-pipeline act”. “It is a classic example of why I think that this federal government needs to think through the national consequences of its policies.”
  • On protests that promote hate. ”I stand in opposition, and in condemnation, of any group out there promoting hate. Whether they call themselves Antifa, whether they call themselves white supremacists. I have also been critical of those Black Lives Matter movements that want to endorse violence and the destruction of human lives and property. What I do support is the groups that have the fundamental right to protest for equal rights, for freedom and justice.”

We also touched on other subjects with Madu, including: the final arguments for the carbon tax appeal at the Supreme Court of Canada, Claire’s Law on domestic violence, his meeting with representatives of the Canadian Bar Association on reviewing the Police Act, and some questions about his skills as a goal scorer in soccer.

Madu also fired back at NDP Municipal Affiars Critic, Joe Ceci who said Madu had “more enemies than friends” from Madu’s time as Municipal Affairs Minister.
