Central Peace-Notley MLA, Todd Loewen has been open in calling for a regional approach to pandemic restrictions.

This time in a Facebook post on his page, he opens his statement saying, “With hospitalizations below the step 3 benchmarks and having been under that level for a month, I am asking the government to honour its commitment and move completely and meaningfully to step 3 re-opening plans.”

The Trending 55 Newsroom asked Loewen is he is still advocating for a local approach and he says he is.

“I think it has a lot to do with the lifestyle that we live,” says Loewen.

“There are many regions within the Central Peace constituency that haven’t had a case, or maybe 1-2 cases in the last six months.”

He adds that the geography of the region is a reason a regional approach makes sense.

“These are big areas, and obviously when we look at having restrictions on the people in those areas, it just doesn’t make sense,” explains the UCP MLA.

“Especially if you are comparing portions of cities where there are hundreds of cases so we have to find a balance there so people can get back to work as soon as possible.”

In past interviews, Loewen has stressed the need for the most vulnerable to the virus to be protected, such as seniors, and those with pre-existing conditions.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Deena Hinshaw has said before that a regional approach would not work in containing the spread of the novel coronavirus.
