Loewen Calling On Province To Address Rural Doctor Shortages

Central Peace-Notley MLA Todd Loewen is pushing the Province to address the issue of doctor shortages in the region.

The hospitals in Fairview and McLennan have seen their emergency rooms closed at times recently because of those shortages which Loewen says is especially concerning because of the distances some people may need to travel to get care.

“This has been an ongoing problem for a while and the government has done some things recently that should help alleviate some of these concerns going forward, but obviously more needs to be done. The government already spends a lot of money and effort to recruit doctors to rural Alberta, but obviously some of these things aren’t working because the situation hasn’t been getting any better.”

Loewen spoke about the issue in the Legislature last week and says he’s heard similar concerns from other areas of the province.

“These are issues that need to be taken care of and obviously the government has had a lot of time to take care of this. This is something that was committed to by the Premier and I want to hold them to account that he’s going to solve this issue and solve it in a timely manner.”
