Lack Of Action On Utility Rebates Drawing Opposition Criticism

The NDP is wanting answers from the UCP government on when people can expect to see the announced rebates on natural gas and electricity.

Kathleen Ganley, the opposition’s Energy Critic, says the delays on getting this done are forcing Albertans to make tough financial decisions.

“There’s a lot of people out there right now who are paycheck-to-paycheck who are making a decision between paying an electricity bill and paying for their groceries, and our government has promised them assistance and that assistance has been a long time coming. I really think this is a failure of leadership that you expect to see in a government focused more on their internal infighting that they are on the people of this province.”

Ganley was on the Trending 55 Hot Seat, and says that transparency from the government on this issue has been lacking.

“They promised a rebate on electricity. They said it was going to be for January, February or March, then it was going to be coming out in April at least that’s what was reported, then nothing for months. They wouldn’t say anything about it, then they’re saying June or July, but the regulation actually says December. Then the Premier went out and said the natural gas rebate might come sooner, then nothing. It turns out it’s still going in the fall again.”

Ganley and Finance Critic Shannon Phillips wrote a letter to the Auditor General, requesting a performance audit of the program.
