Jason Kenney Steps Down as UCP Leader

Jason Kenney announced in a press conference tonight, that he is stepping down as the leader of the UCP.
He made the announcement after the results of the leadership review showed that he only had 51.4% support, much lower than he expected.

“While 51% of the vote passes the constitutional threshold of a majority, it clearly is not adequate support to continue on as leader,” Kenney stated.

“I have informed the president of the party of my intention to step down.”

Kenney went on to talk about the need for the party to move forward united, and with many wanting a change in leadership, he would give it to them.

Recent public polling shows that the UCP may be slipping below the NDP in current popularity. Many conservative supporters believe this may be the “kick in the pants” the party needs right now to turn things around.

A few names being floated around as potential leaders of the UCP include Alberta Finance Minister Travis Toews, Minister of Jobs, Economy, and Innovation Doug Schweitzer, Minister of Transportation Rajan Sawhney, and Minister of Environment Jason Nixon.
