Well at long last I got the chance to IT Chapter 2, after an insane schedule this past weekend covering the CCMA events in Calgary. IT was a great film in my own opinion, not as good as the first one, but it’s a different story being told being set 27 years after the events of the first one. This time the Losers are all grown up with most having no memory of the events except for Mike who stayed in Derry. Once it becomes apparent that Pennywise has returned for another cycle of feeding Mike brings them together again to uphold the promise they made to finish IT. The movie does boast a great cast headlined by James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain and Bill Hader, with Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise. The movie uses Pennywise in his clown form sparingly which adds to film rather than overdoing it. Like the first one the movie has its fair share of comedic moments, though the laughs in this one out do the scares. The scares came far and in between though I heard a few screams from a woman or two behind me in the theater, it depended on suspense and the emotion of the Losers as they need to remember the past to save their future. IT Chapter 2 does venture off from the book as Bill and Becky’s significant others play bigger roles in novel and here they are passing almost afterthoughts in the movie with a 3 hour run time which is why they may have led to the reduced role.
In the end IT Chapter 2 was a great film and one of the best adaptions of a Stephen King novel to the big screen, below the first and the Shinning in my opinion. I give IT Chapter 2 a solid 8/10.
