Last week’s storm is that caused severe damage to the Hines Creek area is being investigated as a possible tornado.

Environment Canada meteorologist Jesse Wagar says the storm came from a system that developed near the BC border.

“The conditions were favourable for the development of storms that could produce tornadoes. The indications were there that a tornado was possible so the tornado warning was issued in order to give people in the area enough time to get to shelter. That storm continued to move off to the southeast for several hours afterwards, it maintained itself for quite a while.”

Wagar says about one or two dangerous storms hit Northwestern Alberta every summer.

“That area of the province is certainly more sparsely populated that other areas of the province so when these storms do hit, they hit in areas that don’t normally see a lot of infrastructure damage. Unfortunately in this case, it did impact Hines Creek. We do get the storms up there, they just tend to hit in less populated areas.”

The investigation into whether that storm was a tornado is still ongoing.

Wagar says their investigation will take some time due to the lack of photographic evidence of a tornado touching down.
