Grain entrapment rescue training coming to the region in March

On March 19-20, 2022 the Canadian Agricultural Safety Society’s BeGrainSafe Trailer will be making a visit to Falher.

The dangers of grain entrapment can be fatal, with it taking less than 15 seconds to become fully immersed in grain whether it be in a bin or trailer. Producers upgrading their bins to larger ones in recent years come with significant risks, including maintaining the condition of stored grain.

When producers are dealing with crusting or pooling along the sides of a bin or trailer due to poor grain conditions, they are at high risk of entrapment when they go inside to resolve the issue. At the point of being stuck up to your knees, self-rescue is not an option and can result in a fatal accident.

The BeGrainSafe Trailer will act as a mobile classroom for firefighters around the region to demonstrate and practice grain entrapment rescuing.

Fire Chief of the Smoky River Fire Department, Marcel Maur said in a statement “Being prepared for every type of emergency, especially within a farming community, is the best thing the department can do”. Chief Maur plans to have firefighters from around the entire Peace Region working with participants during the training in Falher.

SARDA Ag Research has allocated for the grain entrapment training trailer to come to the region since 2019.

Extension Coordinator at SARDA Ag Research, Shellen Gerbig has been the biggest advocate for bringing the important training trailer up north so firefighters know how to rescue those stuck in grain. “We are hoping they take advantage of this opportunity, it could save their lives.” Gerbig commented.
