Fort Vermilion RCMP looking for community input

The Fort Vermilion Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police wants to hear from the community.

Corporal Adam Stokes is spearheading an effort to learn more about questions and concerns the residents and business owners in Mackenzie County has about policing services.

Stokes tells the Trending 55 Newsroom that there are incidents that could be happening in the area that the detachment would not get a call about.

“Unless we get a better idea of what some of those issues are, we cannot direct our efforts in trying to investigate outside of the calls we get on a regular basis,” says Stokes.

Stokes adds that there would normally be a series on town halls but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he says that e-mail and snail mail is the best way to submit feedback to the local RCMP.

He mentions that there could be an opportunity to educate the public on certain issues.

“It could be, for example, kids using their quads unsafely, or in an unsafe area,” explains Stokes.

“We can do some education like, what the rules are of using an ATV, and where it is safe to quad.”

He also points out that Mackenzie County is a large areas and it’s important to hear from as many people as possible.

“We may not have 100 percent knowledge of the vast area we cover and what the concerns of each area are, so this is an opportunity to bring that forward.”

Stokes also wants to stress to residents that if anyone sees a crime, they should not think that reporting it to the police is a waste of time or resources.

“If we don’t know, or do not get that call, someone could potentially be harmed if we don’t know,” concludes Stokes.
