Fairview Shelter worker honoured provincially

The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) annually presents the Joie Dery and Volunteer Awards at their AGM to honor the dedicated service of domestic abuse shelter staff and volunteers.

On September 26, 2024, ACWS announced the winners: Fran Story, a long-serving crisis intervention worker from Fairview’s Crossroads Resource Centre and Women’s Shelter, received the Joie Dery Award.

Fran Story, described as a “mentor” and “role model,” has worked at Crossroads for over 37 years. Wendy Biegel, Executive Director at Crossroads, praised Fran’s unwavering commitment to advocating for women and children experiencing domestic violence. Fran’s ability to inspire and support others, despite challenges and limited resources, is celebrated as exceptional. Cat Champagne of ACWS highlighted the invaluable contribution of frontline staff like Fran, emphasizing the rarity and importance of such dedication in supporting those impacted by violence and abuse.
