Environment Canada says to expect a cold start to 2020.

After a mild Christmas and a lack of snow in December, we can expect the seasonal cold temperatures to return in full force this month. That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist, Dan Kulak. “The mild weather that has been happening in December did come in at a little bit warmer-than-normal and about half the normal amount of snowfall,” says Kulak.

He says the cold front that is making its way through the north came on Sunday night. “The cold front came through Peace River yesterday evening around 8:00 PM and it looks like we are going to have a 10-day, possibly two-week, cold snap across parts of Northern Alberta.”

According to the federal government’s weather service, temperatures are expected to be no warmer than minus 22 in the Peace Region and minus 25 in the Mackenzie area. While it will be frigid in the Big Lakes, people in the area can expect a high of around minus 16.

Kulak also points out that it is hard to predict the weather beyond a two-week window. “That’s really the limit of what we can look at with confidence but at this time, it looks like a traditional January cold snap.”
