COVID-19 UPDATE: January 5

On January 5, Alberta Health Services confirmed 843 new cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 106,378.

26 people passed away, which means 1,168 Albertans have now died from COVID-19.

In the North Zone, there are 7,584 cases of COVID-19 and 72 people have passed away, including three people in the most recent update.

There are currently 1,311 active cases in our zone with 115 in Big Lakes County, 58 in Northern Sunrise County, 53 in the MD of Peace, 35 in the MD of Greenview, nine in Mackenzie County, seven in the MD of Spirit River, five in the MD of Smoky River, while all other jurisdictions in our area have two or less active cases.

AHS is reporting that 91,799 people have recovered from the virus.

This means that there are currently 13,411 active cases across Alberta.

Outbreaks have been declared at the following facilities:

  • Heimstaed Lodge, LaCrete
  • Peace River Correctional Facility

To help slow spread or ease fear of catching COVID-19, the government recommends washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, and to avoid touching the face.

The Government of Alberta also made masks mandatory indoors
