Alberta Health Services is advising people to avoid any swimming or wading into the waters of Sturgeon Lake.

AHS says elevated levels of fecal bacteria were detected around Williamson Provincial Park, and blue-green algae blooms have also been identified in that area and also around Young’s Point Provincial Park as well.

Contact with the water may lead to gastrointestinal illness and also skin, ear and eye infections.

Public health officials will continue to monitor the water of the lake and the advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
