Wet conditions for farmers this year have lead to an Agricultural Disaster being declared in the County of Northern Lights.

Reeve Terry Ungarian says it’s the second year in a row where they’ve had to deal with a large amount of rainfall.

“We started out going into the winter wet and and we started the spring out wet. We’ve had up to 12 inches of rain so far since mid-May in some parts of the municipality. Some crops didn’t get seeded. Some that got seeded are showing a lot of stress from the moisture.”

Ungarian says while this won’t guarantee any financial help, they will be able to lobby the province and the feds.

“Hopefully we can sit down and have conversations with the other two levels of government and see if we can’t start bringing something forward to help because there’s going to be a lot of people throughout the province, and specifically in our municipality, that are going to have some tough decisions to make with the way things are looking right now.”

The full statement from the county can be found here.
