Alberta’s government is taking a new step to address growing class sizes and classroom complexity by bringing teachers directly into the policy process.
Sixteen educators from across the province have been appointed to a newly formed Teacher Advisory Council, where they’ll provide input on education policies, emerging issues, and system priorities. The council will advise Demetrios Nicolaides as decisions are developed.
The positions are voluntary and unpaid, with members serving until June 30, 2027. Meetings will be held online outside school hours.
According to the province, 174 educators applied for the roles, highlighting strong interest from teachers to help shape Alberta’s K–12 system.
Officials say the council is intended to ensure real classroom experience guides decisions—supporting both student success and teacher well-being as schools face increasing challenges.
