Provincial Government Exploring Nuclear Energy

ps-chantelle-de-jonge

The provincial government has been collecting feedback from people across Alberta on how nuclear power can be brought into the energy mix.

Chantelle de Jong, the Parliamentary Secretary for Affordability and Utilities, says most of the feedback they’ve received has been positive.

“There’s great interest from people across the province in this topic and nuclear is new to Alberta. In Peace River at our town hall, we had a full house. There was really great community engagement and we even had some parents who brought their teenagers because they believed it was important that youth and the younger generation be a part of this conversation as well.”

The province’s electricity demands have been growing because of population increases.

de Jong, says a proposal for a nuclear power plant in Peace River shows “strong momentum” to meet those needs.

“The potential for nuclear energy to be a part of that solution is undeniable. That’s why it’s really important to have this conversation now. This project shows that this is really the best time to engage with Albertans on nuclear energy and how together we can shape the path ahead.”

In addition to the province’s growing population, de Jong says nuclear energy is being looked at for industrial applications as well.

de Jong says the engagement panel will deliver it’s final report by the end of March.
