Peace River Exploring Downtown Security Camera System

peace-river-4
Peace River Town Council is exploring a potential downtown camera security system with the purpose of deterring crime and supporting evidence collection in the downtown core.  Council directed administration to look at options and cost estimates.
The discussion was initiated by Deputy Mayor Carr, and includes possible camera installation in downtown and along the pedestrian walkway beneath the new bridge.
Several factors for this project are being considered by Council and relayed onto administration to investigate options.  This includes the purpose of the system, capital and operating costs, whether cameras would be actively monitored or used more passively for review when incidents occur, and technological features.
As part of its preliminary review, administration consulted with the County of Lac La Biche, which operates a camera system in their community.  They have 24 cameras in its downtown core and additional coverage in parks. The system allows for monitoring both in-office and from enforcement vehicles.
Council notes, such an initiative aligns with the Town’s strategic plan goal of fostering a strong, safe, and connected community. Administration will return to Council with detailed options and recommendations once more specific direction is provided from Council on the proposed project.
