Sun Glare a factor in fatal seven-vehicle pile-up near Swan Hills

rcmp-blue-and-red-2-5

On January 20 2026, at approximately 4:20 p.m., a severe multi-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 32, about 43 kilometers south of Swan Hills, near the Blue Ridge Haul Road.

The accident involved four pickup trucks, two semi-trucks, and one sedan.

Emergency responders, including Swan Hills and Whitecourt RCMP, EMS and STARS air ambulance, arrived promptly to manage the scene and assist the victims.

Tragically, a 60-year-old male resident of Whitecourt, driving one of the pickups, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Other individuals sustained injuries of varying severity, none of which were life-threatening.

A mother and her baby were transported by STARS and are reported to be in stable condition.

Preliminary investigations suggest that sun glare, leading to reduced visibility and varying vehicle speeds, contributed to the initial collision between a pickup truck and a semi-truck.

As vehicles attempted to pull aside, another semi-truck, also affected by sun glare, failed to notice the slowing traffic and collided with multiple vehicles.

The Alberta RCMP extends their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and is seeking witness statements and dash camera footage from those who were in the area at the time.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Swan Hills RCMP.
