Above-average temperatures across the region are creating challenging and potentially hazardous conditions on roads and sidewalks, prompting warnings from several local municipalities.
The Town of High Prairie is advising residents to use caution when walking, as rapidly melting snow has left sidewalks extremely icy and slippery throughout town. Officials note that fluctuating temperatures can cause melting snow to refreeze, increasing the risk of slips and falls.
In the Town of Manning, officials say recent snow melt and changing conditions have made some areas difficult to navigate, particularly back alleys. Under the Town’s Snow Removal and Ice Control Policy, back alleys are considered a third priority for snow removal. Residents are being advised to avoid using back alleys where possible and to use front streets instead until conditions improve. The Town says it is aware that back alleys require attention and will be addressed according to the established priority sequence.
Meanwhile, the County of Northern Lights reports that warm weather combined with wind has led to unfavourable driving conditions throughout the region. Motorists are being urged to exercise caution while travelling.
Municipal crews and equipment remain out working to clear roads, and residents and businesses are reminded to do their part by keeping sidewalks clear of ice and snow to help improve safety for everyone.
Warm temperatures are expected to persist across the Peace and Mackenzie Regions through the end of the week, before a return to more seasonal winter weather heading into the weekend.
