The Alberta government announced it will introduce a motion this week under the Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act that will refuse to enforce the federal gun seizure program within the province.
Premier Danielle Smith made the announcement during a speech at the United Conservative Party’s annual general meeting.
The proposed legislation aims to protect lawful gun owners by preventing what the government describes as improper seizures and prosecutions of firearms. It also affirms that Albertans have the legal right to defend their homes and families from intruders.
“This motion ensures Albertans can protect their homes, families, and property without undue interference,” the government stated.
The move continues ongoing pushback by the provincial government over federal firearm regulations.
The full details of the motion will be presented in the legislature.
