Alberta Teachers’ Association Issues Strike Notice Amid Ongoing Bargaining; Peace River School Division Responds…

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) has officially notified school divisions across the province that its members will commence a province-wide strike on Monday, October 6, if a new collective agreement with the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) is not reached.

The announcement marks a critical escalation in negotiations, as the ATA continues to press for improvements in working conditions, class sizes, and compensation. The ATA says it hopes the advance notice will give families time to prepare, but also believes there is still time to reach a deal.

The ATA and TEBA are expected to continue bargaining in the days leading up to the strike deadline.

In response to the notice, Peace River School Division (PRSD) Superintendent Dr. Jeff Thompsonissued a statement to families acknowledging the potential disruption and encouraging them to begin making contingency plans.

“Should a settlement fail to be negotiated, a strike means the provision of educational services by our teaching staff will be suspended and our schools will be unable to accommodate students effective October 6,” Thompson wrote.

“We understand this news may bring challenges and anxiety for your family… and we remain hopeful that TEBA and the ATA will successfully conclude the bargaining process as soon as possible.”

Thompson emphasized that the school division values the contributions of its teaching staff and is committed to keeping families informed through email, the PRSD website, and social media.
