  1. The MD of Greenview has approved up to $10 million dollars in funding for the new 30-unit Red Willow Lodge Enhanced Living Addition in Valleyview.
    Council will be reviewing the agreement to ensure that the investment will work with housing authorities and create opportunity and develiopment of senior supportive housing and living facilities.
  2. Authorities around the region are asking motorists to be careful this long weekend, as traffic and travel is expected to increase.
    Simple tips like not driving impaired, avoiding distractions, buckling up, and letting people know where you are, are being stressed.
  3. The weekend may cool off a little, by the dry conditions will prevail this long weekend.
    That means fire officials are asking people to adhere to the rules concerning fires, if in the back yard, or the back woods.
    Restrictions are still in place, thanks to this week’s warm weather.
  4. Alberta Health Services has issued a blue-green algae advisory for Lesser Slave Lake ahead of the long weekend.
    Blue-green algae appears on the water’s surface and can often look like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs.
  5. It going to be fun this weekend at Lac Cardinal, as the 69th annual North Peace Stampede takes place, starting today.
    Tonight is the Local Barrel Racing with the pro wagon racing happening. Tomorrow and Sunday is the Pro Rodeo, plus the wagons.
    The midway, plus other events and attractions will be present.
  6. The Duncan’s First Nation has a new Chief and Council. Virginia Gladue has been elected, although a tie-breaking vote was needed.
    Keith Lawrence and Rachel Testawich were elected as councillors. The election took place in mid-July.
  7. Strike Group, the N’deh Limited Partnership and the Dene Tha First Nation have formed an agreement supporting energy sector projects in the North.
    The partnership supports entities in High Level and surrounding area, with a shared goal of generating economic benefits from awarded projects for the community.
  8. A petition asking people if they believe Alberta should remain in Canada is now rolling out across the province.
    Thomas Lukaszuk, a former deputy premier in Alberta, submitted the petition in June and has made it clear that this initiative is an attempt to foil any plans for Alberta separatism.
  9. The Northwest Junior Hockey League is doing some adjusting, heading into the 2026 hockey season.
    The expansion Hinton Timberwolves have announced they will not be playing in the League this season.
  10. Meanwhile, Camp dates for the Fairview Flyers, North Peace Navigators, and La Crete Lumber Barons have been announced.
    The Flyers have camp in mid-August, the Navs are at the September long weekend, the Lumber Barons are the weekend after.
  11. The Wheatbelt Baseball League is in the middle of a long weekend hiatus, before it resumes next week.
    Both the Peace River Stampeders and Rycroft Rage are participating in a tournament in Lac La Biche this weekend.
    The Series resumes in Peace River on Wednesday, the Rage took the opening game of the best-of-five series.
  12. The Toronto Blue Jays are back on the field today to start a three-game weekend series against Kansas City at Roger’s Center.
    The Jays haven’t named a starter, but it is Kevin Gausman’s turn in the rotation.
  13. Week 9 of the CFL season continues tonight with Toronto in Winnipeg, however officials are monitoring the Air Quality Index, as smoke from fires in Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan is blanketing the city.
    Other games this weekend, Hamilton is in Edmonton and Saskatchewan is in Montreal tomorrow.
  14. This afternoon is the last of the 30+ degree temperatures, before a reprieve comes this long weekend. Also, things could become wet by Sunday or Monday in the Northwest.
    Temps will stick to the 20’s into next week, and skies will clear out, come the beginning of the short work week.
