The Alberta government is looking to have more supports available for youths dealing with mental health challenges.
The Minister of Children and Family Services, Searle Turton, says they’ve invested an additional $1 million into Youth Suicide Prevention Grants, for a total of $4 million over the next two years.
“We know that the program is actually making a difference. More than 2100 youth right across Alberta, including many indigenous youth which is very important for me, have been supported through these initiatives. These programs that are being funded are after school programming, cultural camps, awareness and educational workshops. We know that there’s going to be a lot of kids that are going to be reaping the benefits of this additional grant funding.”
Turton says the funding increase will help support 17 different organizations across the province.
He says they want to have more resources available in both urban and rural areas.
“My ministry funds family resource networks. These are found in every corner of the entire province. These are great ways as well for youth to be able to access community based programming as well as find mentorship. As I’ve been travelling around the province, I’ve been meeting with family resource networks and making sure that they are tailored to the youth and the cultural dynamics of their respective areas of the province.”
