On Feb. 1, 2025, High Prairie RCMP responded to a report of a firearm being discharged, injuring an adult victim, near a business in the area of Mission Street, in Grouard, Alta.
High Prairie RCMP members, assisted by Faust RCMP and Lakeshore Regional Police, attended while the RCMP’s Real Time Operation Centre, Emergency Response Team and the Containment Team were en-route to assist. Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services, assisted with medical care.
Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that there was an interaction between 3 males outside of the business. One male was assaulted, then that male and another male pulled out handguns, one of which was shot at a third male, resulting in a non-life-threatening injury.
The male was transported by EMS for medical care and was transported later via STARS.
RCMP were able to track the 2 males with handguns to a residence in Kapawe’No, Alta., where the males were located and arrested with no further incidents.
One male who is a youth and cannot be named, was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm when knowing it is unauthorized, possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon with ammunition.
This youth was brought before a Justice of the Peace, where he was released with an upcoming court date of Feb. 24, 2025 at the Alberta Court of Justice in High Prairie.
The second male, who is a youth and cannot be named, was charged with aggravated assault, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, carrying concealed weapon, possession of firearm when knowing it is unauthorized, discharge firearm with intent, possession of restricted/prohibited weapon, possession of weapon contrary to order, as well as his 23 warrants.
This youth was brought before a Justice of the Peace, where he was remanded with an upcoming court date of Feb. 12, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Slave Lake, Alta.
This investigation is still ongoing and RCMP would like to extend gratitude to community members for their assistance thus far.
