The changes happening to Alberta’s health care system aren’t sitting well with the NDP opposition.

Mental Health and Addictions Critic Janet Eremenko says the breaking apart of AHS into separate organizations could negatively impact coordination for patients.

“They’ve put different elements of our health care system in silos, making a much more difficult organization to navigate for patients. When it comes to our healthcare, we don’t break ourselves up into silos and different organizations. We talk about our whole self when it comes to healthcare and our healthcare system should reflect that so that we can actually get the help that we need when we need it.”

Mental health and addiction services was put into the Recovery Alberta organization which began operations this week.

Eremenko says there’s some uncertainties around staffing.

“We know up until this point that it has been a very uncertain and very convoluted process. All signs are pointing for that to continue for the time being. We’ll be watching if that changes, I sure hope it does. I think there are folks who are very well trained and do exceptional work every day and I sure hope that it becomes a bit more stable.”

Eremenko says this could lead to more difficulties for people trying to access care, especially in rural areas.
