The long awaited government report on the status of the St. Thomas More school building in Fairview has finally been released.
The hazardous material assessment confirmed asbestos throughout the facility and determined that modernization of the school is needed.
Total cost of the abatement is estimated at 2.6 million dollars.
Upgrading the school would take another 17 million.
Building a new facility would cost over 36 million.
Holy Family School Division will now be entering into discussions with Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Education regarding the next steps in the process, and to determine the future of the building.
In the meantime, St. Thomas More K-to-9 students will have access to a brand new portable facility, being set up on the school grounds, with one classroom and teacher provided for each grade.
The High School students will go to class at Northwestern Polytechnic’s Fairview campus.
