The Province’s Agriculture Minister has been busy doing a tour of the Peace and Mackenzie regions.
RJ Sigurdson says he was able to get a better perspective on what farmers have to contend with in the North.
“Talking one-on-one with farmers and ranchers, some of our research specialists, our ARA’s, and really just having a conversation about what the area needs up here and what we can do to build better partnerships with the Government of Alberta to continue to help and farmers and ranchers and researchers continue to do the great work that they do every year.”
The past several weeks have seen farmers busy with seeding season.
Sigurdson says while they get most of their information at the end of the season, they do keep track of the reports during the season.
“We continue to monitor the situation as far as rainfall. We’re working together with our irrigation districts down in Southern Alberta because they’re still seeing some shortage of water there. Definitely I’ve heard from the farmers up here that the recent rainfall has been a nice relief and an aid for them and much welcomed over the past couple of weeks.”
There were concerns about droughts early in the season, but Sigurdson says there has been a “vast improvement” in the conditions.
