Canadian historians are marking a milestone of freedom.
Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the landing of Allied troupes on the beach in Normandy France.
The invasion, code-name “Operation Overlord”, started just after midnight on this day in 1944 by air, with the beach landing happening just after 6:30am local time.
Around 10,000 casualties were reported, with over 4,400 Allies killed during the liberation of France and the rest of Western Europe from German occupation.
Historians mark D-Day as “The beginning of the end of World War 2”
