No Start Date Set For NPHL Season

The North Peace Hockey League is hoping that they can get in a full season this year.

League President Jack McAvoy says the teams have had meetings with Hockey Alberta but there isn’t a start date for them yet.

“We’re gonna have another meeting in the first week of October to see where we go from there. Right now we’re not sure what’s going to happen. Definitely we want to get in a full season in if we possibly can. If we can’t, we’re gonna have to work something else out. It all depends on what Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta say we’re allowed to do.”

McAvoy says they will be back up to six teams this season with Fort St. John returning to the league along with Grimshaw, Falher, Manning, Grande Prairie and Dawson Creek.

He says it’s getting “harder and harder” for teams in the league to keep playing and the challenges of the pandemic are just the latest obstacle for the league to get through.

“The money and everything else to run the teams and the availability of players. The minor hockey systems in small town Alberta just aren’t producing a lot of hockey players anymore. You do what you can and try to get everybody involved, but it’s a tough struggle right now.”
